Classes 64(1) and 64(3) A heat exchanger comprises a pile of heat transmitting elements providing alternate helical and radial channels for the heat absorbing and heat transmitting media respectively, the radial channels connecting a chamber surrounding the pile with a collecting chamber inside the pile, and the two fluids flowing generally in contraflow through the heat exchanger. The heat transmitting elements preferably comprise coils 2c spaced apart by ribs 2d, the ribs defining radially expending channels between adjacent tube coils. Fig. 1 shows the heat exchanger 2 disposed within a container 1 connected by inlet and outlet pipes 4, 6 into the circuit of a central heating plant. Water from the central heating system flows through the radial channels in the heat exchanger and thereby heats water flowing in the helical channels, the water heated in the helical channels being withdrawn e.g. for baths, through a conduit 17 and cold water being supplied for heating through a conduit 18. A thermostatically controlled valve (not shown) may be provided in the container outlet 6 to regulate the amount of boiler water flowing to the heat exchanger thereby limiting the temperature of the heated water passing to the conduit 17. Two or more heat exchangers connected in series may be disposed in the container 1 (see Fig. 3, not shown).
