A heat exchanger comprises an inner tube 9 within an outer tube 10, one of which is of flexible material such as rubber, plastics, lead or copper, or of flexible metal hose, the heat exchange media flowing within the inner tube and between the tubes respectively, and the tubes being arranged helically inside and coaxial with a liquid-tight tank 11. In the form shown in Fig. 1 cold water flows into the tank at 1, and at 6 enters and passes through the space between the tubes, being discharged after heating through a connection 2. Heating fluid flows from an inlet connection 3 through the inner tube 9 to an outlet connection 4. The outlet end of the inner tube 9 is coiled around a thermally sensitive element 7 which activates a valve 8 regulating the flow of heating medium through tube 9. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), water to be heated fills the tank after passing within tube 10, and the tube 9 is coiled around the element 7 at its inlet end. The heat exchanger may be used also as a steam condenser or as a brine cooler. When used as a steam condenser, the steam flows through the inner tube. When used as a brine cooler the coolant flows through the inner tube.
