894,503. Heat exchangers. WAUGH Ltd., A. K., and WAUGH, W. R. Nov. 14, 1958 [Feb. 10, 1958], No. 4228/58. Class 64(3) A heater for heating liquid in a tank 9 comprises a casing 1, having an inlet 2 and outlet 3, enclosing a heating coil 4 with return pipe 5 through which steam or other heating fluid is passed via inlet 6 and outlet 7. The coil and return pipe are formed of a solid drawn tube, the outer surface of which is provided with machined uniform V grooves 8 lying adjacent each other. An electric heater and a thermostat may be provided within the casing. In a further embodiment a thermostatically operated valve may control the passage of the heating fluid to the coil and the casing may be surrounded by an outer casing with heat insulating material between the two. In other modifications heating tubes with uniform machined V grooves are formed in a U-shape within a casing with electric heaters surrounding these tubes or the heating elements may take the form of concentric flow and return pipes, the steam supply flowing through the inner tube and returning along the space between the two tubes, in which case the outer wall of the outer tube is formed with uniform machined V grooves.
