A water heater comprises a smooth inner tube 2, above an oil or gas burner 23, surrounded by an annular water space 1 enclosed within an outer tube 3 and insulating jacket 7, and has radially extending rods 8, made of metal of good thermal conductivity, piercing the inner tube 2. The inner and outer tubes 2, 3 are extended beyond the insulating jacket 7 and surrounded by an outer water space 19 heated through radially extending rods 20. Water in the outer space 19 is used for consumption while that in the inner space 1 is used for central heating. The outlet to the heating system 10, 11 is provided with a pump 14, a valve 13 which may be adjusted manually or automatically to regulate the flow of hot water to the heating system, and a valve 15 acting as a shunt to the return pipe 9 to enable water for consumption to be heated when the heating system is shut off. The outer casing has inlet and outlet pipes 21, 22. Thermostats 25 and 26 control the burner respectively when the heating system is in operation and when only consumption water is required. The rods, which may be of copper and adapted to suit the heat content of gas and water, are arranged around the circumference of the inner tube 2 in rows or following one or several helical paths. Since almost all the heat exchange is through the rods, the tube 2 may be made of poorly conducting material, for example synthetic plastics material if necessary lined or coated on the inside with a heat reflecting or heat blocking layer.
