Abstract

1468555 Water heaters; burners THERMO ELECTRON CORP 30 Oct 1974 [1 Nov 1973] 47029/74 Headings F4A and F4T A water heater comprises a tank 18 containing water which is heated by means of a heat pipe 20 containing a heat transfer fluid which is heated by a burner assembly 30 and such that, when an evaporator section 56 of the heat pipe located outside the tank is thus heated, the heat transfer fluid within the heat pipe is evaporated and a condenser section 54 of the heat pipe 20 located wholly within the tank 18 transfers the heat to the water in the tank. Water is introduced into the tank 18 through an inlet 14 and the heated water leaves through an outlet pipe 12. The heat pipe 20 may take the form of a double section with more than one evaporator and condenser sections (Fig. 2, not shown). In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) the heat pipe comprises a pair of concentric tubes (100, 78) defining therebetween a sealed annular enclosure (96) which extends through the tank such that a part of the enclosure located outside the tank forms the evaporator (112) and the other part of the enclosure is located within the tank to form the condenser (114). The tank may be formed of a polyester resin reinforced by glass fibre filament wound matrix 82a-82d inclusive and a plastics foam insulation 80 covers the exterior of the tank.
