Abstract

1286971 Heated bitumen tanks ZIMMERMANN & VONHOF KESSEL-BEHALTERUND APPARATEBAU KG 8 Aug 1969 39806/69 Heading E1G [Also in Division F4] In a storage vessel 1 containing a thermoplastic material to be heated, e.g. bitumen, a heating unit 2 comprising a tubular coil 6 mounted within a housing 3 provided with an insulating jacket 7 projects into and is secured to the vessel 1. A heating medium namely oil, passing through the coil 6 is heated by hot gases from an oil fired burner 4 connected to the outer end of the housing 3. Exhaust gases leave the unit 2 through a chimney 5. The thus heated oil is passed from the coil 6 through a pipe system (not shown) running along the outside surface of the storage vessel. The bitumen in the storage vessel is thereby heated indirectly by heat from the hot oil. The pipe system can alternatively be arranged within the vessel, e.g. on the outside of the insulated housing 3. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 2 not shown) the bitumen vessel is heated by passing it into the heating unit (12) where a heat exchanges with the hot oil in the tubular coil (16), the heated bitumen then being returned to the storage vessel through suitable piping. In this case the hot oil flowing through the coil is heated externally of the unit (12), the burner of Fig. 1 being omitted.
