Abstract

Hot gas water heater of the type comprising a horizontal cylindrical furnace unit, e.g. oil-fired with burner port, with a superimposed, horizontal cylindrical, shell-and-tube heat-exchanger through which the tube bundle conveys hot gases from the furnace unit to an exhaust outlet. Before entering the smoke tubes, the hot gases have to travel the full length of the tube bundle via a passage of annular cross-section contained between the water wall of the shell-and-tube section and a surrounding water jacket through which water is circulated on its way to the shell-and-tube section. A continuous supply of very hot water is obtd. The extended path of hot gases via a pre-heating jacket ensures that the temperature of gases entering the smoke tubes is low enough to avoid scaling of the water side of the heat exchanger as well as other problems such as cracking of tube plates and tubes.
