Abstract

793,572. Electric water heaters. HALLIDAY. M. C. June 19, 1956 [Oct. 13, 1955], No. 29171/55. Class 39(3) A tank 1 with a water inlet 13 and outlet inner casing 5 substantially filled with 4 has a substantially closed cylindrical liquid e.g. water and housing an electric: immersion heater so that water in the tank is heated through the casing wall 5, which carries tubes 11 with open ends extending diametrically across the casing. A metal cylinder 12 spaced around the casing 5 has a lower aperture 13 and upper aperture 14 so that water flows up in a narrow annulus over the casing back into the tank. Water within the sleeve 12 also flows through tubes 11 which are welded to the casing 5. The tubes are arranged skew-wise to form a helical assembly of transverse ducts. The immersion heater 6 coiled into a helix as shown is mounted on the base to conform to the helical column of tubes 11, or two such heaters may be used and may be controlled by a thermostat 19. The casing 5 may have a flexible or elastic top to allow for expansion of the liquid therein; and if this liquid is water, the casing 5 may have an aperture 20 in its conical top to allow the water on expansion to pass into the tank. The casing 5 and cvlinder 12 are flanged for attachment to the tank, which carries heat insulation 2.
