Abstract

In the direct conversion of a crimped tow of continuous filaments into a staple fibre yarn or a spinnable sliver, the tow is opened with deregistration of crimps in adjacent filaments by the method and apparatus described in Specifications 1,001,813 and 1,042,064. The opened tow may be collected into cans or as ball warps and a plurality thereof combined prior to cutting into 3 1/2 " or 1 1/2 " lengths, forming into sliver, stuffer-box crimping, pin drafting and spinning by cotton or worsted system. The sliver and/or yarn is free from shivers or neps, or such normally unwanted conglomerations and entanglements may be allowed to accrue at regular intervals to product effect yarns. The filaments may be of regenerated cellulose, acetate or triacetate, nylons, polyesters, vinyl, acrylic and olefine polymers and copolymers.
