Abstract

A tow or sliver of thermoplastic fibres of any cross-section e.g. trilobal, is subjected to the action of steam, preferably wet, at superatmospheric pressure immediately prior to stuffer-box crimping. The fibres may be of a polyamide such as polyhexamethylene adipamide, a polyester such as polyethylene terephthalate, or a crystalline polyolefin such as polypropylene. The tow &c. may be subjected to the steam for a period beyond that sufficient to raise its temperature to the equilibrium temperature of the steam and the steam pressure may be lower than that employed in any subsequent steam-setting process. Crimped tow may be cut into staple fibres. As described, the fibres emerging from the stuffer-box are collected by coiling into a bag and the full crimp (more than fifteen crimps per inch) is allowed to develop over a period of five hours.
