Abstract
979,918. Crimped polyester filaments. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. July 30, 1963 [July 30, 1962], No. 30243/63. Heading B5B. [Also in Division D1] A plurality of crystallizable linear condensation polyester filaments having an asymmetric birefringence differential across the filament diameters are drawn to a ratio of 2 to 5, maintained under sufficient tension to keep them parallel, and then mechanically crimped. The filaments may be melt-spun, using asymmetric air jet quenching (Specification 927,100) to produce the birefringence differential, and may be treated with a heated liquid containing textile finish agents before and during drawing. The crimping may be carried out by e.g. a stuffer box or a gear crimper. In one embodiment (Fig. 1), a tow 9 of melt-spun and asymmetrically jet-quenched polyester filaments is passed from feed-rolls 1 to 8 to draw rolls 11 to 18 rotating at higher peripheral speed. Between rolls 4 and 5, the tow passes through aqueous bath 10 at room temperature to 40-70‹ C., and while being drawn, the tow 10 is subjected to hot liquid spray 19. The drawn tow is passed via puller rolls 20 to a stuffer box crimper 21, and thence to conveyer 27 and dryer 28. The tow has a 2-dimensional crimp.
