Abstract

1280582 Treating tows MITSUBISHI RAYON CO Ltd 19 June 1970 [30 June 1969 20 May 1970] 30014/70 Heading D1L In a process and apparatus for treating tows of man-made filaments the tow is subjected to the following processing steps, (a) impregnating the tow with a liquid (b) producing an open accumulation of tow in a vertical rectangular section column (c) passing the tow down the column and simultaneously heating the tow by means of a fluid heating medium passing through the accumulated tow, (d) cooling the tow while passing it through a generally 'U' shaped path by means of a cooling fluid passing through the tow, (e) washing the tow under a tension of at least 0.03 grams per denier and (f) crimping the tow. In an apparatus for performing the process of the invention a filament tow A is taken from a tow box 1, passes into an impregnating bath 5, is accumulated in the heat-treating box 8, cooled in the 'U' shaped portion 13, washed in the suction drum baths 20, 21, 22, and passed to the crimper 29. As optional features the tow may be oiled at 24, dried at 26 under a tension of 0.01 to 0.04 grams per denier and preheated at 28 before entering the crimper 29 and, the crimper may be steam heated. The treating box 8, the cooler 13, the washing baths 20 .. 22 and the crimper 29 are described in detail with reference to Figs. 2 to 6 (not shown). The invention may be used for the dyeing or bleaching of tows under conditions of atmospheric pressure.
