Abstract
1,225,143. Treating yarn with hot gas. DEERING MILLIKEN RESEARCH CORP. 4 Dec., 1968 [8 Dec., 1967], No. 57673/68. Heading D1L. Yarn 10 is overfed under low tension through a tube 24 in cocurrent with a stream of a hot compressed gas from a line 26 onto a drum 22 in helical wraps where it is treated with a cross-stream of hot gas flowing from openings in distributor plate 44 of a manifold 23. The gas is exhausted through openings in surface 45 of the drum and recycled to the manifold by a fan (28) through an exhaust chamber 31, ducts (32) and (29), a chamber 27 containing a heater 42 and part of the line 26, and an opening 43. The yarn is advanced along the drum by passage over a canted bar 47 and exits through a slot 34 in the manifold. The yarn may be multi or monofilament and may be of polyamide, polyester, or acrylic material. It may have previously been drawn, crimped, false twisted, or asymmetrically heated or quenched, or may be formed of bicomponent fibres. The gas may be air, steam, nitrogen or argon. The yarn may be heated to a temperature of up to 425F. and subjected to a shrinkage of 5-50% during the overfeeding.
