Abstract

Slubbed, bulky yarn is produced by feeding at least one (so-called "core") bundle comprising cotinuous filaments (or yarn(s) thereof) to a turbulent air zone, separately feeding intermittently, perhaps at random intervals and/or at varying rates, at least one (so-called "effect") bundle comprising staple fibres (or yarn(s) thereof) to the zone, and withdrawing all the bundles therefrom as a single assembly. The continuous filaments and the staple fibre may be of regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate, polyamide, polyolefin, polyester, or acrylic polymer or staple thereof, wool or cotton, and of similar or different colour and/or material. A "scaffold" thread (which is undisturbed by the action of the turbulent air) may be incorporated as part of the continuous filament bundle or by twisting it with the bundles after they have left the zone. The intermittent feed may be obtained by moving the bundle into and out of gripping engagement by feed rollers, or by passing the bundle through a tensioner and a pair of rollers which are grooved or not circular in cross-section so that, during relation of the rollers, the bundle is alternately gripped and released.
