Abstract
Twisted or untwisted yarn is crimped and bulked by a combination of hot-stretching and passage between intermeshing toothed wheels so that constituent, continuous thermoplastic filaments having a multilobal cross-section assume sinusoidal deformations the apices of which are located in haphazard relationship with respect to each other at any point along the length of the yarn and the lobes of the filaments are randomly bent to varying extent along the length thereof to distort their normal <PICT:0925732/IV(a)/1> symmetrical disposition. The filaments may be of polyamides, polycarbonates, polyesters, polyolefins including polyethylene and polypropylene, polyurethanes, vinyl and/or acrylic polymers or copolymers, and/or mixtures thereof, particular forms of which are specified. The lobes may be of different length. Yarns of different composition and denier may be doubled before treatment. As shown, a trilobal yarn 10 of incompletely oriented filaments supplied from a wound package 11 on a bobbin 12 (or directly from a spinning machine) passes around a snubbing bar 13 (acting only as a guide) through guide 14 and feed rollers 15, around a heated draw pin 16, whereat alternation of the yarn is concentrated, and several spaced turns between cold or cooled, cylindrical and/or conical crimping wheels 17, 18, and around a fixed spacer bar or rotatable roller 25, and the treated, potentially crimpable yarn is taken up by a ring twisting assembly 27. The crimp &c. is fully developed in the yarn, before or after weaving, knitting or tufting into a fabric or carpet, e.g. by wet or dry heat treatment in relaxed condition.
