Abstract

Bulk is imparted to continuous filament yarn by differential shrinkage between two or more constituent interlaced bundles of at least two different types of filaments, and the effect may be enhanced by subsequent falsetwist crimping, texturising within a turbulent fluid zone as described in Specification 732929, and/or forming crunodal loops in preselected filaments. Each bundle has a twist of 0-1 turns per inch which is not increased by interlacing (effected, under controlled tension and without formation of loops) by air jets. The shrinkable (10-20%) component (15-75% by weight) may be stretched, but unstabilised, filaments of nylon 6 or 66, copolymers of acrylonitrile and vinylidene chloride, acrylics, polyesters and polyolefins: an unshrinkable component may be stabilised forms of such filaments or cellulose acetate or triacetate, viscose rayon including polynosics. In a continuous process, one or both forms of filament may be freshly spun or drawn from supply spools, stretched (if necessary) between godets, combined (in passing over one godet) passed through an air jet interlacer, and collected on bobbin(s) by a ring and traveller. The differential bulk effect is developed by subjecting the running yarn or wound hanks to heat and/or moisture e.g. in a liquid bath or steam chamber: alternatively, bulk may be developed after weaving or knitting the yarn into fabric the final form of which may exhibit crepe weave or marl appearance. The bundles may be similar or different as regards the nature of the materials, denier, the number and the cross-sectional form of constituent filaments, the direction of residual twists, lustre or dye receptivity, and the degree of interlacing may vary along their length: resultant esthetic effects may occur in the yarn and/or fabric. Interlaced yarns, perhaps of different construction and finish may be used as warp and/or weft in fabrics.
