Abstract
Artificial silk effect yarn having knots, snarls or the like along its length is produced by causing a group of elementary filaments to issue from a spinning funnel with large exit velocity, fall upon an impact plate, and be withdrawn therefrom at a lower velocity. The hastening forward of the thread and the formation of snarls, or balls, on the impact plate is promoted by diminution of the rate of coagulation, e.g. by lowering the temperature of the precipitating water. The high velocity of the filaments issuing from the funnel may be effected by increasing the quantity and exit velocity of the precipitating water. The <PICT:0460626/IV/1> <PICT:0460626/IV/2> impact plate may be tilted backwards, or it may be made concave in order to facilitate the formation of the knots or swellings. As shown in Fig. 1, a group of elementary filaments 2 issues from the spinning funnel 1 and falls with the precipitating water on to the inclined plate 3 to form a small thread heap 8 as a result of the hastening forwards of the thread and the incomplete coagulation. The thread is withdrawn from the heap with constant withdrawal velocity and from time to time, the little heap is carried along as a whole with the thread. The thread passes over guide 4, and acidifying channel 5 to reel 6. As shown in Fig. 3, the impact plate is in the form of a concave dish. In both constructions the inclination of the impact plate may be adjusted. In an example, cuprammonium cellulose solution is spun into a spinning funnel with an exit opening of 6 mm. diameter. The precipitating water flows at the rate of 1 litre per minute and the temperature is maintained at 30 DEG C. The thread is withdrawn from the impact plate at the rate of 60 metres per minute. The thread has knots or swellings at intervals along its length, and has a titre of 200 deniers. In another example, the quantity of water is not greater than normal, but the exit velocity in increased by using a funnel having an exit orifice of only 0,3 mm.
