Abstract

A composite artificial filamentary material possessing a crimp or potential crimp comprising at least two different synthetic polymers so distributed in the material that it has along its length a cross-section made up of two or more distinct components consisting of the different polymers arranged eccentrically, one of the components containing ionizable groups which give it a longitudinal swellability greater than that of the other or others is made by feeding the components separately and eccentrically to a shaping orifice and extending the components simultaneously through the orifice and solidifying or coagulating them. Longitudinal swellability is defined, as the power of reversibly swelling in the direction of the fibre axis. Specified component polymers are polyacrylonitrile, polyamides, polyesters, polyurethanes, polyureas, polyethylene, P.V.C., polyvinylidene chloride and copolymers thereof. The polymers may take up a sheathcore or side-by-side relationship. The ionizable groups which are preferably introduced by copolymerization with a comonomer containing them, may be either attached to a polymer or copolymer forming the component, or the component may be a physical admixture of nonionizing polymer with another polymer or copolymer containing such ionizable groups. The ionizable groups may be basic or acidic e.g. carboxylic, and organic sulphonic and phosphoric acid groups. The component of highest longitudinal swellability may contain 1-15% of a neutral disperse dye-enhancing modifier. In an embodiment two or more streams of different polymers are dry, wet or melt spun with subsequent drawing to form oriented composite filaments. Examples are given. Specification 805,033 is referred to.
