A fibrillar assembly is produced by preparing a mixture of two or more polymers which are incompatible or have only a limited compatibility and which are selected from the group consisting of a polyamide, a polyester, polyethylene and polypropylene, forming from the mixture a heterogeneous article having a coherent polyfibrillar structure and treating the article in such a manner as to decrease the cohesion of the fibrils, not to such an extent that they become separate, but so that they remain together as a fibrillar assembly. The article may be formed by extrusion and may be a continuous filament or a film. It may be stretched before being converted into a fibrillar assemb.y. The article may be converted into the assembly by mechanical action, heat treatment or solvent action. The mixture may consist of nylon 6 with an equal weight of polypropylene or low or high density polyethylene.
