Abstract

1,228,573. Laminates comprising carbon filaments. COURTAULDS Ltd. 9 Aug., 1968 [11 Aug., 1967], No. 36978/67. Heading B5N. [Also in Divisions C1, C3 and D1] A composite material is made by mixing reinforcing filaments of amorphous carbon or graphite and filaments of films or thermoplastic material and coalescing under heat and pressure. The thermoplastic material may be polyamide, polyolefin, polyester, polytetrafluoroethylene or polycarbonate. The reinforcing filaments may be laid in parallel in a series of layers with thermoplastic filaments between them, which may also be parallel, and may be in fabric form. Alternatively, the filaments can be randomly arranged. Thermoplastic films may be shredded.
