Abstract

A felt comprises a base of thermoplastic material perferably in sheet or woven form into which fibres containing from 30% to 100% of thermoplastic fibres have been needled. The base may be of polyethylene, polyamide, polypropylene, polyvinylidene chloride or polyvinyl alcohol and the fibres which are needled thereto may be polyester, polyvinylchloride, mixed polymers, polyacrylonitrile, cellulose acetate or any of the substances suitable for the base: the fibres may be mixed with natural fibres and/or other synthetic fibres such as rayon. If the base is woven it is preferably of monofilament having a diameter between 10 and 30 thousandths of an inch and it preferably has between 5 and 30 picks and ends per inch. The fibres in web form, come from a scribbler and card, a Garrett or randon webber are laid in single or multiple thickness on one or both sides of the base material and are then needled into the base from one or both sides or from one side and then the other: the temperature may be raised, e.g. by boiling (and subsequently drying in a tenter), by heated cylinders, by an oven or by infra red heating, to a temperature of between 60 DEG C. and 200 DEG C. depending on the fibres used and the finish required: pressure may be applied simultaneously to consolidate the felt.
