Abstract

1,166,163. Coating. NIHON LEATHER KOGYO K.K. 1 Aug., 1967 [25 Nov., 1966], No. 35195/67. Heading B2E. An imitation, leather comprises a base material consisting of a non-woven fabric having an entangled structure formed of a mixture of a natural collagen fibre and another fibre and a coating film of a poly (amino acid) or a copolymer of a poly(amino acid) with another synthetic resin, with a polyurethane resin and/or an acrylic resin forming an intermediate layer. The base material may be that of a mixture of natural or synthetic fibre such as cotton or nylon or polyester fibre and the fibrous collagen using an appropriate binder. The intermediate layer may be porous, e.g. a layer of polyurethane resin from which solvent has been extracted by water. A copolymer of an amino acid resin with a polyurethane resin or acrylic resin may be used as the coating film. In the examples: (1) a solution of a polyurethane resin is applied by transfer or doctor coating to a web of non-woven fabric, dried and then coated with a solution of a copolymer of butylacrylate with acrylonitrile and acrylamide by a doctor blade or reverse roll coater and subesquently dried. The web was then coated with a solution of a poly(N-carboxyglutamate); (2) a web of non-woven fabric was coated with a solution of polyurethane resin and then soaked in water to extract the solvent by water to form a porous layer and the coated fabric then treated as in (1); (3) to a napped base material there was applied once or twice a solution of an acrylic resin and then a copolymer of an amino acid resin with a polyurethane resin or an acrylic resin was applied. The artificial leather has an excellent air permeability, water vapour permeability and weathering resistance.
