Abstract

1136938 Permeable polyurethane coatings CARL FREUDENBERG 25 April 1966 [24 April 1965] 18093/66 Heading B2E [Also in Division B5] A permeable layer of polyurethane is formed by coagulation from a polyurethane solution in a solvent mixture of dimethylsulphoxide with at least one of tetrahydrofuran, acetone, 1,4-dioxane, or methylethyl ketone, the proportions of the solvents being chosen such that the permeability of the layer obtained is higher than that of a layer obtained when the solvent is dimethyl sulphoxide alone. The solvent may contain 10 to 30% tetrahydrofuran, 20 to 40% dioxane, 10 to 30% acetone, or 40 to 60% ethyl methyl ketone. The solution may also contain an emulsifier. Artificial leather may be produced by applying the solution to a fabric, and coagulating the solution to form a permeable layer thereon. The fabric may be woven, knitted, non-woven, or batting, and may be composed or natural or synthetic organic or inorganic fibres e.g. cellulose, polyamides. polyesters, wool, silk, linen and acrylic fibres, a fleece of polyamide fibres containing butadiene - acrylonitrile as binder being specified. Coagulation may be effected by addition of water, lower alcohols, n-hexane, toluene, or mixtures thereof. The layer may be physically treated by applying a suitable finish, roughening or polishing. The layer may contain dyes or pigments.
