Abstract

241,570. Duratex Corporation, (Assignees of Smith, P. S.). Oct. 16, 1924, [Convention date]. Fabrics, pile.-A fabric is made by placing a mass of loose wool or hair fibres 10 on one side of a base fabric 12 of burlap, heavy cotton open-mesh cloth, or thin sheeting, projecting the fibres through the base 12 by barbed needles, removing the excess of fibres on the underside of the fabric by singeing &c., fixing the fibres by rubber cement, pyroxylin, or oxidized oil, and then combing, brushing, raising, and shearing the projecting fibres 18 to form a pile surface. The projected threads may be sheared near the surface to resemble plush, velvet, or velour, or they may be covered with a coating of rubber cement &c. as shown in Fig. 6, and felted to produce, a woollen appearance. A coating of cellulose ester such as is used in making artificial leather may be applied to the face of the fabric, which may be calendered. The fabric may have additional coats of rubber cement, pyroxylin, or oxidized oil to render it waterproof, and it may be, treated further with aluminium acetate. A sheet of fabric may be cemented to the rear side of the product. Specification 8202/15, [Class 140, Waterproof &c. fabrics], is referred to.
