Abstract

1,175,530. Non-woven fabrics; finishing fabrics. FIBRELOCK FABRICS Ltd. 4 Dec., 1967 [6 Dec., 1966; 2 Sept., 1967], Nos. 54521/66 and 40207/67. Headings D1R and D1S. A method of making a non-woven fabric comprises needling a layer of base fibres of substantially equal diameter not exceeding 30 microns or 7 denier through a substrate from one side and subjecting the fabric to a compaction process while wet and then to a stretching or tentering process to return the fabric to its original dimensions. Primary fibres which may be the same as or different from the base fibres may be needled or tufted through the composite substrate after needling of the base fibres and before compaction. The compaction process may include milling or friction. The base fibres may be needled to both sides of the substrate as may the primary fibres. The substrate is preferably a scrim of nylon or cotton or worsted, the scrim having between 12 and 30 warps and wefts per inch. Various examples of fibres are given including, protein hair fibre e.g. cashmere, camel hair, llama, mohair, cotton, wool and man-made fibres e.g. acrylics, polypropylene and polyvinyl chloride.
