Abstract

1,229,781. Laminated fabric. BURY & MASCO INDUSTRIES Ltd. 14 March, 1968 [15 Dec., 1966], No. 56199/66. Heading B5N. [Also in Division D1] A needleloom fabric is produced by initially needling on to a flexible backing material a batt or combination of batts of fibres, repeating the needling step at least once from the fibre side and/or the backing side of the assembly, and consolidating the material so produced. The backing material is a woven, knitted or netted material, or an adhesive-bonded, stitch-bonded or spun-bonded non-woven material, or an elastomeric foamed material. When the backing is woven it consists of spun yarn, multifilament yarn, split film, fibrillated film, yarn produced from split film, taped produced from split film, yarn produced from fibrillated film, or tape produced from fibrillated film or any combination of such materials. The batt or batts may consist of wool or synthetic, e.g. nylon, or regenerated fibres or any combination thereof, and the fibres may be straight laid and/ or cross laid and/or random laid. The consolidating operation may be " blowing ", i.e. passing air and/or steam through the fabric whilst it is under comprsesion. In one embodiment two batts are needled to one side of a scrim, and two further batts are needled to the same side of the scrim, the second needling being heavier than the first. The fabric thus formed is subjected to " blowing ", and the consolidated fabric needled from the scrim side to produce a pile effect. In another embodiment the assembly of batts and scrim is needled from the scrim side before " blowing ". The fabrics produced may be used for covering tennis balls.
