Abstract

Felted structure are produced by superimposing a plurality of non-woven fibrous webs having an orientated fibre structure one on top of the other with the fibre direction in each web angularly disposed with respect to the fibre direction in adjacent webs, consolidating the superimposed webs by needling from one or both sides, stretching the consolidated webs to tension the fibres and coating the stretched web on one or both sides with a water-insoluble elastomeric adhesive. The webs may be orientated at right angles to those in adjacent webs. The structure may contain both synthetic and natural fibres. Non-woven fibrous webs of synthetic fibres may alternate with non-woven fibrous webs of natural fibres. Each non-woven fibrous web may contain both natural and synthetic fibres. The structure may contain a mixture of fibres of different tensile strength and the consolidated structure is stretched in the direction of the fibres of highest tensile strength. The stretched web may be compressed before application of the adhesive. Immediately after coating with adhesive and before the adhesive is dry, the coated surface or surfaces may be subjected to a jet of compressed air thereby to rupture films of adhesive stretched between the fibres. The stretched web may be compressed after treatment of the adhesive with compressed air. The stretched web may be coated with adhesive by spraying or by passing between two rollers one of which has the adhesive applied thereto by a doctor blade. The adhesive may be an elastomeric polymer of butadiene, acrylonitrile or 2-chloro butadiene. The non woven fibrous webs used may have a weight of from 20 to 150 gm/sq. metre.ALSO:Felted strucutures are produced by superimposing a plurality of non-woven fibrous webs having an orientated fibre structure one on top of the other with the fibre direction in each web angularly disposed with respect to the fibre direction in adjacent webs, consolidating the superimposed webs by needling from one or both sides, stretching the consolidated webs to tension the fibres and coating the stretched web on one or both sides with a water-insoluble elastomeric adhesive.
