Abstract

1314725 Leather substitutes CARL FREUDENBERG 23 April 1970 [24 April 1969 4 Feb 1970] 19586/70 Heading B2E [Also in Division D1] A non-woven fabric bonded by a heat coagulated binder in first areas only of the fabric, second areas of the fabric distributed amongst the first areas being substantially free of the binder. In one embodiment a fleece 3 of 70% viscose rayon and 30% polyester shrink fibre is needled, shrunk in area by heating, impregnated with a heat sensitive coloured polyacrylate dispersion and passed between externally gas heated textured rolls 5, 6 having an irregular raised pattern in the form of veins. The binder is thereby displaced from the vicinity of the raised parts of the rolls and then coagulated. The fabric is then quenched in a cold water bath and the uncoagulated binder washed out with water, dried and split. Each half of the web is then coated by being pressed onto a layer of polyurethane spread on a carrier which is subsequently removed, to give a glossy or matt coated fabric used as a leather substitute. In a second embodiment the impregnated fabric is passed under a heated roll (21 Fig. 2, not shown) having raised portions (1), the temperature, pressure, and the speed of the fabric being such that the binder in the pressed areas (1') is coagulated. The uncoagulated binder is then washed from areas (4', 4") to give a "spot-bonded" fabric in which spots (1') are regularly arrayed.
