Abstract

950,068. Laminates. M. T. HOFFMAN. April 4, 1960 [April 8, 1959], No. 11832/60. Heading B5N. [Also in Division D1] A non-woven laminated textile product adapted for use in wearing apparel comprises a foundation layer bounded by a pair of parallel surfaces and a lining layer formed by relatively loose fibres of which a portion projects through the foundation layer and has ends situated on opposite sides of the foundation layer. The foundation layer is formed by a layer of randomly oriented fibres defining interstices between the fibres thereof and having elastic fibre-connecting tie means localized at discrete points and predominantly at the crossover points of fibres, thereby imparting isoelasticity to the foundation layer. The fibres of the lining layer project through a portion of the interstices of the foundation layer and are clamped in position by the action of the isoelastic forces in the foundation layer. The term isoelastic indicates that the material has substantially the same elastic proper ties in any direction in its plane. The foundation layer may be made by superposing several thin carded webs of natural or synthetic fibres in angular relation and spraying with an aqueous dispersion of a rubber, drying and vulcanizing. As shown, the foundation layer 2 is unwound from roll 1, a non-elastic open fabric or netting 5 from a roll 4 is laid upon it, and a mat or fleece 7 of relatively loose fibres from a roll 6 laid upon the open fabric. The superposed layers are then needled together by the needle-loom 8 to form the finished fabric 9. The relatively loose fibre may be deposited from a garnetting machine instead of being drawn from the roll 6, or the open fabric 5 may be omitted. A second layer of loose fibre may be needled to the other side of the foundation layer. The rubber binder of the foundation layer may be only partially vulcanized before the needling, and fully vulcanized afterwards.
