Abstract

1,161,320. Laminated fabrics. JOHNSON & JOHNSON. 14 Oct., 1966 [18 Oct., 1965], No. 46009/66. Heading B5N. A method of making non-woven fabrics comprises forming a composite web of fibres, said web having at least three layers, two of said layers having between them an interlay 4 of fibres, constituting a third layer, having a denier at least twice that of the fibres in the layers on each side of the interlay, bonding the larger denier fibres and the smaller denier fibres with a bonding agent, and then splitting the web along the interlay. The fibres may be carded or randomly disposed and are laid down in a series of superposed layers. In one method layers 2, 3 and 4 all consisting of rayon fibres are superposed, impregnated with binder, e.g. a solution of an acrylic resin binder, such as Hycar (R.T.M.) by passing between wetted rolls, dried, heated to cure the binder, and split along the layer 4 by passing the composite web between a pair of rollers to form two non-woven fabrics each having one surface of larger denier fibres and the other of smaller denier fibres. In other examples given the outer layers are of rayon and the inner layer is of Dynel (R.T.M.) or a 50/50 blend of rayon and cotton, or the outer layers are a 50/50 blend of rayon and cotton and the inner layer is of rayon, or the outer layers are of cotton and the inner layers are of rayon, in which latter case a corn starch solution is used as the binder. Other fibres which may be used are linen, hemp, silk, wool, wood pulp, acetate, polyester, acrylic or neodacrylic fibres. In a further method the web comprises several interlays of larger denier fibres arranged alternately with layers of smaller denier fibres. Splitting is effected along each of the interlays to produce fabrics having the larger denier fibres on one or both surfaces.
