Abstract

[Also in Division D1] A non-woven material comprises a fibrous structure in which a portion of the fibres are passed through the thickness of the structure, e.g. by needling, and extend beyond a surface as tufts which are napped. The fibres are adhesively bonded in the structure. The structure can comprise two layers, the fibres from the second layer being passed through the foundation layer. The fibres in the foundation layer can be mechanically bonded, e.g. by airlaying and needling. The fibres in the second layer also can be bonded by air-laying or carding and cross-lapping. At least a portion of the fibres in the foundation or second layer or both can be composite fibres containing at least one potentially adhesive component, e.g. poly- (hexamethylene adipamide) and a copolymer of poly-(hexamethylene adipamide) -poly- (epsilon caprolactan). A blend of fibres can be used in the layers, e.g. the above composite fibre mixed with poly-(hexamethylene adipamide). The fibres can be bonded by heating to activate the potentially adhesive component of the fibres. The aligned fibre tufts can be retracted by at least 10%, e.g. by heating to shrink and/or crimp the fibres before or after bonding and/or napping the structure. There may be a reinforcing layer between the foundation layer and the second layer or the second layer and the tufts. The reinforcing layer can be a woven scrim or bonded non-woven structure.
