Abstract

A simulated pile fabric comprises a first layer of fibres forming a foundation layer and a second layer of fibres forming a fibre tuft precursor layer fibres from the second layer are oriented through the foundation layer and project beyond the surface thereof in the form of fibre tufts which are set in the foundation layer, at least a proportion of fibres in at least one layer being composite fibres having at least one potentially adhesive component which is activatable to effect the setting of the fibre tufts. The fibre tufts are preferably additionally set by the crimping of at least some of the fibres of the foundation layer. The fibres of the second layer are oriented through the foundation layer by passage of the layered structure through a needle loom, the crimp in the fibres then being developed by heat treatment. Preferably the fibre tufts projecting beyond the surface of the foundation layer are also crimped, Fig. 4 (not shown). The foundation layer and the second layer may each comprise a plurality of layers of fibres. When used as floor-covering material, the non-woven fabric may be attached to a hessian scrim with or without a polyurethane foam layer. Alternatively, the hessian scrim with or without the polyurethane foam may be situated between the foundation layer and the fibre tuft precursor layer. The fibres present are prefarably polyamide, but polypropylene, polyethylene, polyurethane and polyethyleneterephthalate are also mentioned. Prior to or during the spinning operation, pigments, plasticisers, dyes, moth- and fire-proofing agents, fillers and the like may be added. The potentially adhesive component of the fibres may be activated by heat or chemical media e.g. a non-aqueous formaldehyde solution.
