Abstract

1453701 Laminated fibres IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 6 Dec 1973 [8 Dec 1972] 56676/72 Heading B5N A bonded fibrous sheet material comprises a non-woven web of fibres or filaments which include at least a proportion of multicomponent fibres and a scrim fabric attached to one face of said non-woven web at least in part by bonds formed between said scrim fabric and fibres or filaments of the web oriented in planes perpendicular or substantially perpendicular to the plane of the sheet, said bonds being derived from the multicomponent fibres. The bonded fibrous sheet may be made by forming a non- woven web from fibres at least a proportion of which are multicomponent fibres which can be activated into an adhesive state, placing a scrim fabric on one side of the non-woven web and needle punching the resultant assembly from the side of the non-woven web opposite to that contacting the scrim fabric in a needle loom and finally treating the needle-punched assembly to activate the multicomponent fibres to cause bonds to form between fibres of which the non-woven web is composed and between web fibres and the scrim fabric. One or more non- woven webs which may be made from continuous or staple fibres may be used, the non- actuatable fibres of the web being thermoplastic, e.g. nylon, thermoset, inorganic or natural, e.g. wool or cotton. The exemplified multicomponent fibres comprise a core of nylon 66 surrounded by a sheath of nylon 6. The scrim may comprise nylon and cotton fibres or polyester and cotton fibres. Bonding of the fibres may be effected by oven treatment.
