Abstract

1277471 Pile fabric S A COTEXMA NV 9 March 1970 [10 March 1969] 12533/69 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions B5 and D1] Pile fabrics are produced by needling a structure comprising (a) a carded or garnetted layer of fibrous material 5, e.g. crimped polyamide, acrylic or polyproplene fibres, (b) a foundation layer 2, e.g. of cloth composed of polyethylene or polypropylene fibres or ribbons, optionally reinforced with a cloth 4 and (c) a strippable layer 1, e.g. of felt material optionally reinforced by a cloth 3. Fibres from layer 5 are needled into layers 2 and 1, the barb penetration during needling not exceeding the thickness of the composite structure. Further layers of fibrous material may be applied on top of layer 5 and the needling repeated. An adhesive or potentially adhesive backing layer of natural or synthetic rubber latex, soft polyvinyl acetate or polyvinyl chloride plastisol, and a wetting agent are applied at 7 and is made to penetrate the composite structure which then passes through an infra-red oven 8 to set the needled fibres in the foundation layer 2. The latex may be foamed. The strippable layer 1 is then removed to leave a pile fabric in which the needled fibres extend substantially perpendicularly from the surface of layer 2. A self-supporting pre-needled felt or loosely woven cloth may be used instead of a separate fibrous layer and foundation layer. The pile may be sheared to a uniform length.
