Abstract

870,324. Laminates; agglutinated fibrous sheet materials; felt; seaming non-metallic sheet materials. BIGELOW-SANFORD CARPET CO. Inc. Aug. 24, 1959 [Oct. 17, 1958], No. 28828/59. Drawings to Specification. Classes 42 (1), 42 (2) and 140. [Also in Group IX] A cushioned carpet comprises a pile fabric with the pile extending from its front face and a backcoating (e.g. of latex) on the rear face of the fabric, and a pad of fibrous material removably attached to the pile fabric over the backcoating by fibres of the pad extending into the pile fabric, but not substantially beyond the base of the pile on the front face of the fabric. The pad may be a batt which is formed on the backcoating and consolidated and secured to the pile fabric by needling. The needles used preferably have a smaller diameter than the strands of the backing. Pieces of the carpet may be seamed by delaminating edge portions, applying adhesive tape to the edges of the backcoating of the pieces to be joined, and replacing the pad. The bottom surface of the pad may be finished by spraying with water glass and burnishing with a smooth roll.
