Abstract

694,460. Compound sheet materials. SOMMER, N. P. F. March 1, 1951, [Oct. 21, 1950] No. 5026/51. Class 140. A composite textile material suitable for upholstery and clothing such as slippers, comprises a backing 7 of felt comprising tangled textile fibres which has pegs or tufts 9 of fibres drawn through by barbed needles, and a facing fabric 12 secured to the backing by an adhesive 10 which serves to hold the tufts firmly and to amalgamate them. The exposed surface 11 of the felt backing may be raised by a teazling machine. The adhesive, which may be latex, rubber solution, gutta percha, vegetable gum, synthetic rubber, or vinyl resin, may be applied to one or both layers which are then united in a heated press. One layer of adhesive may first be applied to fix the tufts of fibres, after which a superposed adhesive layer is applied to secure the facing fabric. The facing 12 may be felt, molleton, or knitted fabric.
