Abstract

A process for the production of a tufted-pile fabric comprises tufting a pile yarn into an unwoven backing fabric containing shrinkable fibres and subsequently shrinking the backing fabric. The shrinkable fibres may be heat shrinkable or capable of being shrunk by an organic swelling agent therefor. Part of the pile yarn may be of the same chemical type as the shrinkable fibres in the backing and there may be a plurality of pile yarns of different shrinkage properties to give pile tufts of different heights. After the shrinkage operation the tufted fabric formed may be united to a substratum of a different backing material e.g. a felt sheet or a woven or knitted fabric, by sewing or by welding.
