Abstract
A carpet material is produced by knitting a pile fabric having a ground yarn of a shrinkable material and a pile yarn of relatively low shrinkage and subsequently subjecting the fabric to a heat treatment to cause the ground material to shrink and thereby accentuate and secure the pile loops within the fabric. Various synthetic yarns may be employed for the ground material and the pile yarn can consist of wool, cotton or a synthetic material such as nylon. Steam or liquid heat treatment may be employed for treating the fabric or alternatively the fabric may be passed through a heated fluidised bed of sand. The fabric may be produced on a flat bed or circular knitting machine and patterning by using alternative pile feeds may be achieved. The pile can be cut on the machine.
