Abstract
A fully-fashioned garment or garment portion is slackly knitted on a straight-bar machine from two yarns in plating relationship, the yarns comprising a face yarn plated on a backing yarn having a relatively high extensibility but capable of being relaxed or shrunk. On completion the garment or garment portion is subjected to a finishing process which effects a permanent relaxation or shrinkage of the backing yarn with the result that the face yarn has its loop structive compressed into a smaller unit area. The face yarn can also be extensible such that during the finishing process it relaxes or shrinks to a certain extent but only to the extent such that its loop structure is still compressed into a smaller unit area by the contraction of the backing yarn. The face yarn may be wool, rayon or polynosic or a linen slub yarn exhibiting a boucle effect. The backing yarn may be a polyamide, polyester, acrylic, P.V.A. or processed polyester. The finishing treatment may involve subjecting the garment to dry heat or bulking in hot detergents at temperatures less than or up to boiling point. Alternatively the garment may be subject to steam setting.
