Abstract
1,176,789. Finishing fabrics; knitting. LAWSON PRODUCTS Inc. 26 April, 1968 [28 April, 1967], No. 19805/68. Headings D1K and D1S. In a fabric including spandex yarn concatenated to spandex yarn, the contacting portions of the spandex yarns are fused together. Preferably, the fabric is knitted from spandex yarn 9 and the contacting leg portions of the yarn loops which form stitches are fused together. As shown, a body yarn 10, e.g. of rayon, nylon, acrylic, polyethylene terephthalate, wool or cotton fibres or a crimped thermoplastic synthetic yarn, may be knitted with the yarn 9. After knitting, the fabric is wound into a roll under substantially uniform tension and placed in an autoclave into which steam is introduced to heat the fabric for a total of 15-30 minutes at a temperature of 230-300F, preferably 250-290F. After the initial introduction of steam, the autoclave may be exhausted to vacuum after which steam is reintroduced into the autoclave. Preferably, steam is introduced into the autoclave for five or six five-minute periods alternating with the autoclave being exhausted to vacuum. Alternatively, hot air may be used to effect the fusion of the spandex yarns at the points of contact thereof and external tension may be applied by a tenter frame. If the fabric has been made into a stocking or other garment, then the garment may be placed on a form prior to heating.
