Abstract

In a method of making knitted fabrics, e.g. socks or outerwear, cotton yarns are given s or z twist and are mercerized and retwisted before being interknit, the fabric then being preshrunk. The yarns are given a twist in the single of 2.2 to 5.5 x #S turns per inch, where S is the cotton yarn number, and may be plied with yarns of like or opposite twist. Plied yarns are twisted in either direction within the range 1 to 8 #S/N turns where N is the number of plies. The yarn is then mercerized in a 15% to 20% solution at a temperature of between 70 and 130‹F. The yarn is then retwisted in either direction, but preferably in the same direction as the ply twist, within the range of 0.5 to 5 x #S/N turns to alter the extent but not the direction of the twist. The yarns are then loosely knit with s and z yarns in alternate courses or groups of courses. The fabric is pre-shrunk, prior to dyeing, either by warm washing, or tumble drying to reorientate the stitches preferably at an above-ambient temperature. After dyeing the fabric is boarded.
