804,938. Knitting. PATENTEX, Inc. Feb. 3, 1955 [May 10, 1954; Aug. 3, 1954; Sept. 2, 1954 (2)], No. 3271/55. Drawings to Specification. Class 74 (2). [Also in Group IX] Alternate courses, or alternating groups of courses, or a stretchable, retractable fabric are knitted from continuous filament thermoplastic synthetic polymer yarns to which have been imparted torsional stresses of opposite hand by heat treating the yarns and twisting, one in one direction and another in the opposite direction, the wildness so produced being temporarily restrained by plying each of the yarns with another yarn which can be subsequently removed by chemical action having no effect on the polymer yarns. A balanced, sheer fabric may thus be produced. The polymer yarns may be oppositely twisted, heat treated and again twisted (preferably reverse twisted beyond the starting point). The temporary restraining yarn may be silk or cellulose acetate and be removed by means of caustic soda acetone or acetic acid. The method may be used for ladies' stockings or underwear. A stocking made by this method has the usual sheer leg portion and reinforced areas. The reinforcing yarn may be the above yarn or conventional yarn.
