Abstract

1353066 Knitting VYZKUMNY USTAV PLETARSKY 23 June 1971 [14 Dec 1970] 29332/71 Heading D1K [Also in Division B6] A fabric having a relief pattern is produced by forming a fabric whereof one portion contains yarn of one shrinkability and another portion contains yarn of another shrinkability, the portions being shaped to form complementary zones of a pattern, and shrinking the fabric so that the portions together form a pattern having ground and relief zones. Preferably the more shrinkable yarns are selected from yarns containing filaments or staple fibres prepared from copolyester of polyethylene terephthalate and polyethylene isophthalate. The less shrinkable yarns are preferably mechanically textured synthetic filament yarns. The yarns may have different dye affinities and the fabric may be dyed. The dyeing process may utilize a dye having a substantially different affinities for the complementary portions. In a typical example a knitted fabric was produced on a knitting machine using for the red courses a yarn consisting of 40% copolyester fibre based on polyethylene terephthalate and polyethylene isophthalate, and 60% of another copolyester fibre and for the plain course a polyamide textured yarn. The fabric was then shrunk by e.g. steaming for 30-60 seconds, boiling for 10 minutes or shrinking may be carried out in the dyeing bath during the dyeing process. The fabric was then scoured in a bath containing a nonionic ethylene oxide condensate and sodium carbonate at 60‹C, then dyed in a dye bath at a temperature initially 40‹C, slowly increasing to the boiling point and then reducing after 1-1.5 hours. The fabric is then softened with a cationic lubricating agent, hydroextracted and dried.
