Abstract

Textile materials made from thermoplastic fibres or mixtures thereof with non-thermoplastic fibres are heat-set and subsequently scoured to remove contamination by passing them through a bath of a solvent which is trichloroethylene, perchloroethylene or 1:1:2-trichloro-1:2:2-trifluoroethane. The thermoplastic fibres may be polyethylene terephthalate, nylon, cellulose triacetate, acrylic or polyolefin fibres and the non-thermoplastic fibres which may be admixed therewith are cotton, flax, viscose rayon, polynosic rayon, wool, silk and regenerated protein fibres. Woven fabrics, filaments, yarns, apparel such as stockings or non woven goods such as felted or knitted goods may be treated. The heat-setting may be effected by means of heated air or super-heated steam. The solvent may be at or near the boil and may subsequently be removed from the fabric by contacting it with a heated aqueous medium or steam. The fabric may subsequently be subjected to enzyme desizing and/or chlorite bleaching or may be padded in an aqueous alkaline solution of a peroxygen compound of pH above 11 and having an alkalinity corresponding to at least 7.2 grams per litre NaOH, steamed and passed into a bleaching bath of pH 9.5-11 and of alkalinity less than that corresponding to 7.2 grams per litre NaOH and steamed.
