Classes 120(3) and 142(4) Single, intertwisted or plied yarns of synthetic organic textile fibres e.g. polyamide or polyester fibres, which have been crimped by high-twisting, heat-setting and backtwisting are subjected to a moist or dry heat treatment e.g. by means of dry air or steam, in stretched condition and under constant tension to effect a temporary reduction of the latent crimp. Crimped yarns, optionally in combination with different yarns e.g. uncrimped yarns of the same fibre material, smooth or creped yarns of regenerated cellulose or cellulose derivatives, or silk, are formed into a woven or knitted fabric or article e.g. woven fabric having warp of creped rayon yarn and alternate weft yarns crimped by opposite high-twisting, or warp of smooth polyamide yarn with weft of balanced plies of crimped yarn. The fabric or article is subjected to a wet or steam treatment which may be combined with or form part of normal finishing treatments e.g. goffering, scouring, rinsing, bleaching, washing, drying, in order to restore, at least partly, the original latent crimp of the yarn and may finally be set and shaped by a moist or dry heat treatment, e.g. steaming on a tenter frame. In the treatment for reduction of latent crimp, backtwisted yarn may be wound under tension on bobbins and heated or passed continuously in stretched condition through or in contact with a heating apparatus, e.g. an electrically heated metal tube or surface, and/or the heat treatment may be combined with another operation, e.g. a false-twisting stage of the crimped yarn production.
