A woven, knitted or non-woven fabric is continuously napped in at least two napping passes through a napping machine and is moistened to an increasing degree from one napping passage to the next. The first napping pass may be carried out with the fabric in a dry condition to allow the clothing points to penetrate more powerfully into the fabric and subsequent napping passes are carried out with an increasing degree of moisture. As shown, on the feed side of a napping machine 10 a moistening device 12 which may be in the form of a steamer is mounted on a bracket 11. As the seam 14 of the endless fabric 15 to be napped passes a seam feeler 13, the latter, through a lead 17, regulates a control 16 of the device 12 and thus also the supply of steam by the steamer. After a predetermined number of passes of the fabric is, the feeler 13 switches the supply of steam off. In modifications, the moistening device is controlled by a pass counting mechanism and may be heated by elements heated by electricity or gas.
