An ironing-machine comprises a shoe A having a heated convex sole A<SP>1</SP> and an endless driven belt or apron H adapted to carry garments or fabrics placed thereon across the sole A<SP>1</SP> to iron one side of the garments or fabrics, the belt or apron being carried by a plurality of rollers H<SP>1</SP>, H<SP>2</SP> arranged so that one or more of the rollers can be moved to a position where the belt or apron is clear of the sole. The shoe is arranged to float on or be held down by springs C<SP>1</SP> to allow automatic adjustment according to the thickness of the fabric being ironed. In the example shown, the roller H <SP>1</SP> is mounted on arms L<SP>1</SP> which are pivoted at L <SP>2</SP> on the machine frame D and are held in the working position (Fig. 1, not shown) by means of releasable catches M which engage with pins M<SP>1</SP> on the frame D. Telescopic arms N incorporating a pneumatic cylinder control the descent of the arms L<SP>1</SP>. The tension in the belt H is adjustable by means of manuallyoperated adjusting screws O which control the positions of the arms L<SP>1</SP> releative to their pivot pins L <SP>2</SP>. Steam may be blown on to the fabrics before passing across the sole A<SP>1</SP>, by means of a pipe S extending across the front of the shoe and connected to a steam generating chamber T within the shoe A. The shoe also contains electric heating elements E. The roller H' is driven through a chain and reduction gearing by an electric motor.
