[Class 138 (ii)] An ironing-machine comprises an ironing member 35 suspended by a universal joint 37, spring 39, and adjustable rod 33 from a carriage 30 provided with rollers 29 which traverse a rod 14. The latter is secured at its ends to discs 13 provided with eccentric trunnions 12 rotatable in bearings 11 carried by the pillars 2 of a stationary frame 1 which supports the work table 42. The trunnions are provided with sprockets 16 over which pass chains 17 of which one end is secured to springs 18 adjustably anchored to the stationary frame, and the other end of each chain is connected by a cable 24 to a crank arm 23 on a shaft 21 to which a treadle 19 is secured. The springs normally maintain the rod 14 in the raised position with the iron out of contact with the work. The carriage comprises plates 30 held together by the axles 31 of the rollers 29 and provided with guide blocks 52 for preventing undue lateral displacement of the carriage. A saddle 47 is pivotally mounted on the carriage and is provided with a cross-piece 50 through which the rod 33 slides, the latter also passing through an elongated slot in the cross-piece 32 between the side plates 30. The work table, which may be steam heated, is provided with lateral slots for the escape of vapour, and a supplementary work table 57 serving as a sleeve board may be pivoted to the frame 1.
