Class 100 (2) In a machine for marking blank pieces of material with a design, especially boot and shoe blanks, a platen 10 is supported by two pairs of pivotally mounted links 12 and 14 for movement parallel to two tables 6 and 8, and is loaded by a substantially vertically moving weight. The table 8 supports the blanks to be marked, while the table 6 carries a marking substance; e.g. ink spread directly thereon, on a pad, or on a ribbon. As shown, a member 22, clamped to a shaft 16 pivotally supporting the links 122, has a lever 24 carrying a detachable weight 26 pivoted on its lower end. The lever 24 is pivoted to a link 28 pivoted to a fixed member 30. In operation, the platen is moved manually by a handle 20 so as to mark a blank on the table 8, thus raising the weight 26 in a mainly vertical path, whereupon the handle is released to cause the platen under the influence of the weight 26 which swings downwardly, to contact the marking substance on the table 6. In a modification, movement of the platen towards the table carrying the blank causes a weight, suspended on one end of a chain secured at its other end to a pulley, to be raised. When the handle is released, the weight drops, thus causing rotation of the pulley and through a second chain pivotal movement of one pair of 'inks supporting the platen, such that the platen contacts the table carrying the marking substance. Alternatively, the machines may be operated by a treadle connected either directly to the platen or to one of the shafts supporting the platen.
