Class 78 (1) [Also in Group XVII] A wrapping machine of the kind comprising an intermittently rotatable mould wheel 16 having a series of pockets 14, each constituted by a pair of gripper jaws to which the articles to be wrapped are fed in succession by a reciprocating pusher 17, a wrapper 18 of paper or other material being fed across the path of movement of each article so as to be pressed with the article into the pocket by the pusher, and a transfer member 19 between which and the pusher the article and wrapper are nipped, the transfer member being movable with the pusher so that the pusher, article, wrapper and transfer member move together into the mould wheel so as to control the article and wrapper until it is gripped by the jaws of the pocket, i s characterized in that the transfer member 19 is arranged to move at the end of its operative stroke in a direction transverse to that moved during the operative stroke sufficient to clear the jaws of the adjacent mould wheel pocket, and to commence its return stroke during rotation of the mould wheel. The articles are lifted by the pusher 17 from pockets 12 in an intermittently rotated feed wheel 13. The transfer member 19 is resiliently mounted on a bracket 21, being pivoted thereto and urged by a spring 27 against a stop 28. The bracket is carried by parallel links 23 secured to shafts 24 journalled in a support 22 vertically reciprocated by a cam-operated link 43 connected to a vertical shaft 39, which carries the support 22 and is guided by a bearing member 41 and rollers 42. Each shaft 24 has a pinion 29 secured thereto and engaged by a rack 31 to rock the links 23. The rack 31 is reciprocated, to cause the bracket 21 and thus the transfer member 19 to move transversely at the end of the operative stroke of the member 19, by a cam 36 on a shaft 37 rotated by a splined driving shaft 44 and guided for vertical movement in the bearing member 41. In an alternative construction the transfer member 19 may extend from a vertical shaft arranged to be vertically reciprocated between pairs of rollers mounted in a supporting bracket, the transverse movement of the member 19 being effected by rocking the bracket about a pivot by cam and link means.
